A-Z of London

For our London 2012 topic, we are each making an A-Z of London which includes information about the important landmarks you would see in London and famous people who live there. We have been learning about lots of different things, such as the London Aquarium, Big Ben and Cleopatra’s Needle. This week we have been researching The Evening Standard- did you know it has been a London newspaper since 1827 and that it is given out for free?

Here are some other facts from our ‘E’ pages-

There are 32 pods on the London Eye- Noah
The London Eye is three times bigger than Tower Bridge- Luca
Euston is a main line station in London- Orlando

We have also made graffiti style front covers for our work this week using masking tape and bright paint.

Paddington’s picnic!

This afternoon the boys in Year 1 have enjoyed a fabulous picnic in the sunshine with their Teddy bears. We planned the picnic to celebrate our Paddington topic work and to raise money for Action Medical Research, a children’s charity supported by Paddington which is 60 years old this year. You can find out more about Action Medical Research here-http://www.action.org.uk/

The boys really enjoyed spending the day looking after their bears and they had the chance to give the bears a tour of Lovell House! Each boy made a marmalade sandwich which we then enjoyed eating outside with our bears.

Broad beans

1S Broad Beans on PhotoPeach

This week in Science we have planted some broad bean seeds in glass jars. We will be observing the seeds over the next few weeks and keeping a record of their progress in our ‘Bean Diaries’. We have used blue paper instead of soil and we are making sure that the seeds get lots of sunlight and water. So far, Marcus’ jar contains the biggest shoots, but we’re hoping they will all have grown a little when we come back to school after the long weekend!

Writing letters to The Queen

This week the boys in 1S have been planning, drafting and writing letters to the Queen. We had to think of several questions we could ask the Queen and chose the best one to include in our final letters. Here are some of the questions we thought of-

‘ Where is the best country you have been to? ‘ Thomas

‘ How many countries have you been to? ‘ Aman

‘ Which Kings and Queens have you met? ‘ Harrison

‘ What is your favourite dress? ‘ Jack

‘ What is it like to be Queen of England for 60 years? ‘ Noah

‘ How is it having so many dogs?’ Orlando

We also had to find out how to correctly write a letter to the Queen. At the end of our letters we had to write ‘Your Majesty’s humble and obedient servant’ before signing our names. We have sent all of our letters of to Buckingham Palace and we are really hoping to get a reply!

London 2012!

We have started our new topic ‘London 2012′.  When we came back to school on Wednesday, the school had been transformed ready for the start of our topic and all the teachers were dressed in London themed costumes! Mrs Cox was a very keen London tourist, Miss Smith wore the Olympic football kit and Mrs Baker was an underground tube station, Baker Street!

Somebody was even dressed as the Queen- can you tell who is behind the mask?

We have begun our London work in 1S by learning a little about the Queen’s favourite animals, her Corgis. The Queen has three Corgis – Monty, Holly, Willow. She also has three Dorgis (cross-breed of Dachshund and Corgi) Cider, Candy, Vulcan. We had a go at drawing our own Corgis and giving them a Royal name, before displaying them in the classroom. We hope you like our artwork!

Giant Galapagos tortoises

In 1S we have been reading a book called ‘We’re Sailing to Galapagos’ and learning about the islands. We have learnt that the islands have a very famous inhabitant, the giant tortoises. Did you know that these huge animals are the symbols of the Galapagos islands, or that they can live for up to 150 years?!

The book is full of wonderful illustrations, and here are our own attempts at making giant tortoises through collage.

Celebrating Easter

This week we have been making Easter cards and Easter bunnies. To make our fabulous Easter cards, we followed the steps below-

1. Draw a hill with flowers on

2. Add the cut-out shape of a bunny to your hill

3. Add a tail to your bunny

Inside the cards we wrote special messages to our families to wish them a Happy Easter!

We have also used polystyrene eggs to make Easter Bunnies. We had to paint the eggs pale blue, pink or purple and add eyes, ears and a fluffy tail. When our rabbit was ready, we made a nest for him using a cake case.

We are looking forward to performing our Easter poem next week.

Mother’s Day

‘It is important to thank our mums, because they work very hard to do things for us’ – Orlando

This week we have been making Mother’s Day cards to thank our mums for all that they do for us. We made cards and handprints which we put into a special bag. We had to think very hard about using our best handwriting.

In 1S we think it is very important to say thank you to our family and all the other people who look after us.

‘Thank you for taking me to cricket’- Jagpal

‘Thank you for making my dinner’- Rayan

‘Thank you for giving me fun and exciting weekends’- Thomas

‘Thank you for filling my hot water bottle when it is cold’- Harvey

Lots of people use Mother’s Day to say thank you to other people who look after them, like their sisters and Grandmas.

We hope our mums will like their cards!

3D shape building

This week we have been making towers and models out of 3D shapes such as cubes and pyramids.

After we had made our models we kept a tally of which different 3D shapes we had used. We found out that a sphere will not balance on top of a pyramid!

Here are some facts about 3D shapes from the boys in 1S-

  • Square based pyramids have 5 faces- Naveen
  • Cubes have 6 square faces- Marcus
  • Cylinders have 3 faces altogether and they can roll on a table top- Harvey
  • Spheres have 1 face which goes all the way around- Jack
  • Cuboids have 6 faces, sometimes the faces are square and some are rectangles- Rayan
  • Dice are cubes- Thomas

World Book Day

Yesterday was World Book Day. At Lovell House we were visited by local author, Jonathan Emmett. He read some of his super stories about pigs to Year 1. We loved hearing about a piglet and a princess who changed places! ‘The Pig’s Knickers’ was also one of our favourites.
We asked Mr Emmett lots of questions about his life as an author. Some of the questions we asked are below-

“How did you become an author?”- Jagpal

“What is your favourite character from a story?”- Harrison

“What is your favourite book to read?”- Naveen

We learnt that Mr Emmett loved the book ‘Where the Wild Things are’ and that he liked to take animal characters and make them more human.
It was a brilliant day, and Mr Emmett even signed some books for our school!
